The Usability of Music for Social Inclusion of Children (UMSIC) project is developed from a pilot study of a time- and place-independent singing tool MobiKid for small children aged 4-6, carried out in Oulu, Finland 2006-2007. It aimed at linking musical development, cognition and musical communication/engagement with music, with mobile technology in order to create new contexts for communities of musical practice of children. The karaoke-like prototype allowed children to work successfully with familiar songs.
